Welcome to....The Land of Game
Thursday

It's about time I gave these guys a review...I've only been rocking out to their new CD for about a month now.  If you don't know who this band is, then I suggest checking your pulse to see if you're alive and currently existing.  Thursday is Geoff Rickly (vocals), Tom Keeley (guitar), Steve Pedulla (guitar), Tim Payne (bass), and Tucker Rule on the drums.

"War All The Time" 2003

Whatever you do, do NOT listen to Rolling Stone's BS review.  I'm sorry, but "War All The Time" is one of the top CD's of the year, and not a '3-star' bargain bin stuffer.  I know I've said that a lot recently, but the fact remains that we've seen some great CD's come out (Third Eye Blind, A Perfect Circle, and now this one).  With this CD, Thursday has shown improvement that can be classified by leaps and bounds.  No longer do they just jump into a song.  Now, they have worked on progressing the tracks with some great introductions.  In every case, the patience pays off.  Songs like "Asleep In The Chapel" and "Tomorrow I'll Be You" are made ten times better by the first 20-30 seconds (especially the latter song, with a particularly sweet un-Thursday-like intro).  The opening song "For The Workforce, Drowning" is about America's unemployment and as usual is a very aggressive song, however they maximize it's power by throwing a slow bridge in the middle that leads into an even more powerful final chorus.  That's something they didn't do on their previous CD.  "War All The Time" is perhaps one of the best anti-war songs I have ever heard.  Geoff's lyrics, particularly the chorus, stand out immensely......."in the shadows of a New York skyline we grew up too fast, falling apart, like the ashes of American flags....".  Just listening to it makes you realize how much our lives have changed after 9/11, whether we realized it or not.  My personal favorite still has to be the hit single "Signals Over The Air".  I still don't know quite what it's about, but if you haven't heard it DOWNLOAD IT NOW.  By far one of the best Thursday songs, not to mention one of the best songs on the radio period.  I really could go into detail about every song on here, but then I'd be wasting your precious time while instead you could be bettering your very existence by buying the CD at this very moment!!!!  If you weren't too high on the last Thursday CD, I guarantee you "War All The Time" will have you changing your tune.  What are you waiting for?  Go buy it!!!!

"Full Collapse" 2001

Early 2002 marked the annual Q101 Jamboree, and after scrounging up enough money for tickets, the Gar, Wazon, and myself made the trek out to the Tweeter Center to catch the show.  Oh, there was plenty of ear candy around; names like Our Lady Peace, the X-Ecutioners, Local H, Zwan (before they swiftly broke up), and Kid Rock all played to capacity crowds.  However, there was one little-known band that I coudn't wait to hear in person, and that was Thursday.  I had heard their radio single "Understanding In A Car Crash", and had been incredibly intrigued as to what else they had to offer.  Well, upon hearing them live that day, I was won over; they had a new fan.  I immediately went home to download their entire CD (because I didn't have enough money after the tickets), and have been a happy camper ever since.  As far as sound goes, they have their own.  You won't find many light songs on thier CD, but that's because their music is more serious-minded and is meant to be intensely up-front.  In fact my favorite song on "Full Collapse" is watching a friend die in an automobile accident (a true story), hence the name "Understanding In A Car Crash".  However, the song seems to be even more than that.  Just hear it and decide for yourself.  Perhaps the best song on the CD is called "Standing On The Edge of Summer".  It's about how as Geoff's grandma died and was experiencing the loss, he also met the love of his life.  Overall a great song.  My other favrite song is called "A Hole In The World", and it has some great lyrics as well as a great ending to the song that highlights the bass as well as a piano.  Some other songs to check out are "Autobiography of a Nation" and "Paris in Flames".  The only negative about this CD is that sometimes it IS a little over dramatic, and there is a little too much screaming.  Overall, it's probably more of a 3.5 instead of a 3, but to decide for yourself, go download some songs or buy the CD.
