Third Eye Blind

Thrd Eye Blind is one of my favorite bands, so excuse me if I have a little biased opinion of them.  But hear me out....I wouldn't hold them in such high regard if they weren't as good as they are.  Third Eye Blind is: Stephen Jenkins, vocals and guitar; Arion Salazar, bass, guitar and backup vocals; Tony Fredianelli, guitar and backup vocals; and Brad Hargraves on the drums.  5 stars is a must-have, 4 is very good, 3 is ok, and anything less, don't bother.

"Out Of The Vein" 2003

4 years later, and after experimenting with their new guitarist, Third Eye Blind cranked out "Out Of The Vein".  When you listen to this for the first time, you might notice that the album seems a little more subdued than the previous 2, but I can guess that is more because of the new guitarist than anything else.  However, hear it again....then you really get a feel for it.  This CD is represents the band more than anything else they've put out.  As Jenkins says on the bonus DVD, this album's goal was to seperate from what they've done before.  Nevertheless, it's almost become my official summer album.  The lyrics are once again awesome, except for a line about tater tots in "Can't Get Away".  But even that can't touch the rest of the album.  The first song, "Faster", can be described as a song about getting laid in the shade, how can you beat that?  "Palm Reader", probably the best song on the CD, has perfect sounding drums and a nice quitar, but what makes it are the lryics.  PLEASE, download it and hear it for yourself!  "Misfits" is kind of a dark song about Jenkins' groupies, but is sweet anyways, especially the crickets in the background and a PERFECT acoustic quitar.  "My Hit And Run" is kind of a mix between the Wounded song on their Blue album, but is an extremely powerful song about dying, the last things we'll see and think about, and how we go on after we are gone.  I don't know how anyone can't like it, so I suggest you download that too.  Others highly worth checking out are "Company" (kind of a song about a mental patient), "Danger" (a fast paced song about basically having fun), and "Good Man" (not for the actual song itself, but around the 4:55 mark, an untitled song plays that perfectly closes the album).  If you can't download it, just ask a friend for the CD, or better yet, BUY IT!!!!  You honestly won't regret it, one of the top 3 albums so far this year.

"Blue" 1999

If you liked the first Third Eye Blind CD, here's some interesting news to think about:  most critics didn't give high marks for the album, mainly saying that the album wasn't innovative enough for their tastes.  Now, any true Third Eye Blind fan would be pissed to hear that crap, since you most likely disagree with the "acclaimed critics" reviews.  I know I do.  Nevertheless, front man Stephen Jenkins wasn't to pleased to hear that either.  The result?  "Blue" is probably one of my favorite albums of all time.  The group completely reinvents their sound more of an alternative style to all-out flamboyance.  Nowhere is this more apparent than in "The Red Summer Sun", where if you listen closely amidst the drums and arcing guitar riffs, you might just find a bit of random opera and wind chimes thrown in.  The vocals on this album are not spared any creativity either, as Jenkins often relies on a sweet underwater effect on later songs, most noteably "Darwin".  My personal favorites aside from those already mentioned are "Anything" (the opening track, setting the tone), "Wounded" (about a rape victim....great lyrics and an awesome intro), and "Deep Inside of You" (one of their hit singles).  And once again, Jenkins reaffirms his status as one of the greatest lyricists today.   Overall, this is one of the few CDs where I can honestly say every song is worth a listen.

"Third Eye Blind" 1997

I bought this CD off of my friend for $2.  And may I say what a damn good purchase that was.  I'm sure just about every person on the planet has heard their singles "Semi-Charmed Life", "How's It Gonna Be", and "Jumper."  But that's not why I bought the CD.  I wanted to hear the OTHER songs that never made it to the radio.  The song "Motorcycle Drive-by" is perfect if you are a decent type of guy who has just been through rejection.  "God Of Wine" just flat out rules, and is a calmer type of sound than the rest of the album.  "Losing A Whole Year" is one of the sweetest opening tracks I've heard on any CD.  And "Narcolepsy" contains what me and Watson declare as the best lyric of all time...'there's a [bomb] in my hand that connects to a drink - in a crowded room where the glasses clink - i'll buy you a beer and we'll drink it deep - because i can't keep from falling asleep.'  Pure sweetness.
